Jane Dough posted yesterday about an article that examines the magic of $1,000,000. She says she doesn't think a million dollars would change her life.
I find that really interesting. I'm wondering how big a windfall would have to be to really change your life. And how would you change your life if you had the money to do it?
Would you:
* Change careers?
* Travel?
* Move to a different region or a different house?
* Have more kids?
* Take a sabbatical?
* Retire early?
What other life-changing things would you do if you only had the money? Do you even want to change your life, really?
Personally I do think a million bucks, landing in my lap tomorrow, would change my life. I would probably use it to change careers, or at least take a stab at changing careers. I'd go back to school, and take some time off to write fiction. Sure, I'd probably have to go back to being a librarian eventually because everybody knows the odds are stacked against making a living as a writer, but that's okay. There are worse things than being a librarian.
I may also use a big chunk of it to move closer to family. That would be a pretty big change.
And of course I would invest much of it for retirement, which wouldn't change my life now but would have a huge impact on my later years. With my modest career, I'm looking at a pretty modest retirement. Investing, say, a 250-500K now toward my retirement would mean I'd be able to really enjoy my later years.
Interesting thoughts.
Change Your Life.
Just the phrase alone is sort of stirring. I can see how self-help gurus can capitalize on this idea.
